Marketing is a fun and inspiring field of work. With practically every business doing some form of advertising, marketing has become a continual challenge to create, improve, and innovate. However, the key to a successful marketing campaign isn’t just a genius idea – it’s footwork. You can have hands down the best idea for a slogan, an infographic, or a viral video, but it doesn’t mean a thing if you aren’t getting it into the right social channels.
Internet marketing is no different from traditional marketing methods when it comes to having copious amounts of footwork.
You’ve got this great piece of content and now you have to get other people to publish it on their websites. It’s time to start knocking doors, figuratively speaking. Before you send out a hundred personalized emails seeing if someone would be willing to publish your content, make sure your target will do the following for your content:
- Check to see if their content has outbound/inbound links. If they don’t, then they’re probably not going to give you links back to your site. They might give you credit in a writer bio and this is still valuable. But not as valuable as a direct link to your homepage in the top portion of your content.
- They should have a “Write for us” section! This will usually give you guidelines for their preferred writing style and how you can contact them. Score! Now you have all their contact info. Hold onto that.
- Use websites that Google has already deemed “Cool”. It’s always valuable to get your content on another website. But check who’s ranking for the keywords you want to target and you’ll see exactly what Google is already excited about. Those are the websites that are going to give you the most value if you can score an outbound link.
- Utilize websites with a similar target audience. This will help you build your own following. However, if you find a website willing to publish content from you, be sure that you can write for their target audience no matter how different from your topic they may be.
Successful outreach gets you links – bottom line. Search engines see these large websites with your link on it and it increases your sites value. The more you can do this, the more valuable you’ll present yourself to the search engine.
